As you examine your life, you might find yourself reflecting on plans to care for your family should the unexpected happen. A Will allows you to choose how to distribute the assets that you have accumulated during your lifetime, and a charitable bequest in your Will provides the flexibility to use part of these assets for the charities that mean the most to you. You can have it both ways: Ensure the financial well-being of your family and provide for the nonprofits, just like St Joseph Church & Shrine and St Anthony Church-Gretna, that you love. If you’re interested in helping sustain our Catholic heritage for future generations, the Catholic Community Foundation (CCF) can help. Please contact CCF Executive Director Cory J. Howat at [email protected] or 504.527.5778 for more information about how to remember St Joseph Church & Shrine and St Anthony-Gretna in your Will.

God calls us to leave a lasting mark with all the gifts He gives to us. What will your legacy be?
Our Legacy is the spiritual and material impact we have on our families and our community by how we live and by what we leave behind. God made us for legacy. He created legacy giving us Jesus, His Word, the Eucharist, and the church. He created us and calls us to make something beautiful of all the gifts He gives us, leaving a legacy just as Jesus and the saints did.
The impact of our legacy contains two important aspects: The Spiritual Component and The Material Component. The Spiritual Component consists of the values, beliefs, and faith we pass on. The Material Component is made up of the valuables, the possessions we leave behind.
Legacy also invites us to consider church as family. How impactful is the church in our lives? All of our family’s big, most sacred events happen at church: baptism, marriage, last rites, and more. A legacy gift as a bequest through your will or by including the church as a beneficiary of your IRA or life insurance is a great way to honor the good the church does for us and our family.
Please consider making a gift to the parish in your will. Your gift will allow us to carry on the mission of bringing Christ’s love to your family and the community for generations to come.
If you have any questions around creating your legacy plan, please contact the Catholic Community Foundation at 504-596-3045. They are happy to assist you.

"An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints". To gain indulgences, whether plenary or partial, it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: — have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; — have sacramentally confessed their sins; — receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); — pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an "Our Father" and a "Hail Mary" are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence. For the sake of those legitimately impeded, confessors can commute both the work prescribed and the conditions required (except, obviously, detachment from even venial sin). Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth.

The Gretna Historical Society was founded in Gretna, Louisiana in 1969 by Lloyd E. Gomez (insurance man, volunteer firefighter, and community activist), who descended from Gretna pioneers, German immigrants Claudius and Catherine Nuss Strehle. The articles of incorporation for the GHS were drafted by Gretna attorney Everette F. Gauthreaux and signed in his law office on October 26, 1969. Today the GHS operates the Gretna Historical Society Museum Complex at the corner of Lafayette Street at 2nd. It consists of three 19th century Creole cottages, a blacksmith shop, and the Louisiana Fire Museum. The GHS also owns and maintains the caboose and train depot on Huey P. Long Avenue at 4th Street. There are no requirements for membership in the GHS, other than the timely payment of annual membership dues of $20 per person. Monthly meetings are held at the St Joseph's complex at the corner of Newton and 7th Streets, on the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm. Guests and prospective members are always welcome to attend the meetings. The society newsletter, Gretna Chronicles, is published monthly and mailed to its members.

On Saturday October 18, 2024, there will be a Communal Celebration of the Anointing of the Sick at the 8:30 AM Mass at St Anthony in honor of St Luke, Patron Saint of Physicians. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is both “a liturgical and a communal celebration.” In the family home, hospital, or church, members of the Body of Christ gather for the sacramental rite led by a priest. The Penitential Rite followed by the Liturgy of the Word and sacramental anointing of the sick can inspire and comfort both those who are ill and their family and friends who are gathered (CCC, nos. 1517-18). Many parishes have communal celebrations at which many persons receive the sacrament. These sacramental celebrations are a “source of strength amid pain and weakness, hope amid despair” and a “joyful encounter” for the entire community (Christifideles Laici, no. 54).
Our Annual Blessing Of The Pets in honor of the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi will be on Sunday September 28, 2025. Blessing at St Joseph's Holy Family Garden will be at 4:30pm and at St Anthony near the grassy area by carport at 6:00pm. The change in date from the actual Feast Day is due to Gretna Fest which will be held Friday-Sunday October 3-5th, 2025
Almighty God, whose great power and eternal wisdom embraces the universe. Watch over all police and law enforcement officers. Protect them from harm in the performance of their duty to stop crime, robbery, riots and violence. Help them keep our streets and homes safe, day and night. We commend them to Your loving care because their duty is dangerous. Grant them strength and courage in their daily assignments. Dear God, protect these brave men and women, grant them your almighty protection and unite them safely with their families after duty has ended.
