Catholic Charities Food for Seniors is the sole agency of Louisiana’s Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) which works to improve the health of low-income elderly persons at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA Foods. The program also educates clients about good nutrition by providing nutritional information that includes easy to make recipes using commodity foods, caloric intake, how to stretch food dollars and eat a healthy diet. Catholic Charities’ Food for Seniors is an equal opportunity program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. The Silver Rose program demonstrates the unity between Knights of Columbus in Canada, the United States and Mexico, through a series of prayer services promoting the dignity of all human life and honoring Our Lady. Overview Each year, from early March through mid-December, Silver Roses are stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along routes from Canada to Mexico. Every stop the Silver Rose makes throughout the pilgrimage is a rosary-centered occasion for Knights, parishioners and community members to pray for respect for life, for the spiritual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Catholic Charities’ food pantry is open Monday – Thursday from 10 am – 2 pm. The food pantry is located at 2505 Maine Ave in Metairie. Clients should go down the driveway to the left of the building. The food pantry is located in the back building, fourth door from the front. Clients can receive a pre-packed bag of food and some optional supplemental items every two weeks. Clients fill out a simple intake form at their first visit, and at subsequent visits only need provide their name.

On First Saturdays, the Rosary will be prayed after Mass. ++ The Five First Saturdays devotion is one of the principal points of the Fatima message. It centers on the urgent need for mankind to offer reparation and expiate for the many injuries that the Immaculate Heart of Mary suffers from the hands of both impious and indifferent men. On the First Saturday during 5 Consecutive Months, the Devotion consists of: 1. Going to Confession, 2. Receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion, 3. Saying five decades of the Rosary, 4. There will be a Rosary Rally at St Anthony Church on October 11, 2025 at Noon in the Church asking for the intercession of our Blessed Mother in regards to solving America's problems. This is an Annual Rosary Rally that will be celebrated throughout the United States at the same time so that we will all be in prayer together asking for God's help through Mary's intercession and the intercession of all our brothers and sisters.

On Saturday October 18, 2024, there will be a Communal Celebration of the Anointing of the Sick at the 8:30 AM Mass at St Anthony in honor of St Luke, Patron Saint of Physicians. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is both “a liturgical and a communal celebration.” In the family home, hospital, or church, members of the Body of Christ gather for the sacramental rite led by a priest. The Penitential Rite followed by the Liturgy of the Word and sacramental anointing of the sick can inspire and comfort both those who are ill and their family and friends who are gathered (CCC, nos. 1517-18). Many parishes have communal celebrations at which many persons receive the sacrament. These sacramental celebrations are a “source of strength amid pain and weakness, hope amid despair” and a “joyful encounter” for the entire community (Christifideles Laici, no. 54).

St Gerard Majella is the patron saints of expectant mothers, unborn babies, women in labor and mothers. His Feast Day is October 16. He prayed for expectant mothers that they carry their children to full term and that they be born healthy and the mothers remain healthy also. After his death, a woman was on the verge of losing her baby in childbirth. A hankerchief that belong to Gerard was applied to the area of her womb and she was able to give birth with no futher complications. In honor of St Gerard Majella, we will celebrate the Blessing Of The Child In The Womb on Sunday October 12, 2025 at the 9:30am Mass at St Joseph. All expectant families are invited to this Mass for the Blessing. Please invite others to come to this event.

"An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints". To gain indulgences, whether plenary or partial, it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: — have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; — have sacramentally confessed their sins; — receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); — pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an "Our Father" and a "Hail Mary" are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence. The Gretna Historical Society was founded in Gretna, Louisiana in 1969 by Lloyd E. Gomez (insurance man, volunteer firefighter, and community activist), who descended from Gretna pioneers, German immigrants Claudius and Catherine Nuss Strehle. The articles of incorporation for the GHS were drafted by Gretna attorney Everette F. Gauthreaux and signed in his law office on October 26, 1969. Today the GHS operates the Gretna Historical Society Museum Complex at the corner of Lafayette Street at 2nd. It consists of three 19th century Creole cottages, a blacksmith shop, and the Louisiana Fire Museum. The GHS also owns and maintains the caboose and train depot on Huey P. Long Avenue at 4th Street. There are no requirements for membership in the GHS, other than the timely payment of annual membership dues of $20 per person. Monthly meetings are held at the St Joseph's complex at the corner of Newton and 7th Streets, on the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm. Guests and prospective members are always welcome to attend the meetings. The society newsletter, Gretna Chronicles, is published monthly and mailed to its members.

Catholic Charities Food for Seniors is the sole agency of Louisiana’s Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) which works to improve the health of low-income elderly persons at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA Foods. The program also educates clients about good nutrition by providing nutritional information that includes easy to make recipes using commodity foods, caloric intake, how to stretch food dollars and eat a healthy diet. Catholic Charities’ Food for Seniors is an equal opportunity program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. Share the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe and promote respect for life by participating in this meaningful pilgrimage. The Silver Rose program demonstrates the unity between Knights of Columbus in Canada, the United States and Mexico, through a series of prayer services promoting the dignity of all human life and honoring Our Lady. Overview Each year, from early March through mid-December, Silver Roses are stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along routes from Canada to Mexico. Every stop the Silver Rose makes throughout the pilgrimage is a rosary-centered occasion for Knights, parishioners and community members to pray for respect for life, for the spiritual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Fr. Gary will again this year be offering classes on our Catholic Faith for those interested in becoming Catholics, preparing for Adult Confirmation, or wanting to enrich their Faith. On Saturday October 18, 2024, there will be a Communal Celebration of the Anointing of the Sick at the 8:30 AM Mass at St Anthony in honor of St Luke, Patron Saint of Physicians. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is both “a liturgical and a communal celebration.” In the family home, hospital, or church, members of the Body of Christ gather for the sacramental rite led by a priest. The Penitential Rite followed by the Liturgy of the Word and sacramental anointing of the sick can inspire and comfort both those who are ill and their family and friends who are gathered (CCC, nos. 1517-18). Many parishes have communal celebrations at which many persons receive the sacrament. These sacramental celebrations are a “source of strength amid pain and weakness, hope amid despair” and a “joyful encounter” for the entire community (Christifideles Laici, no. 54).

Almighty God, whose great power and eternal wisdom embraces the universe. Watch over all police and law enforcement officers. Protect them from harm in the performance of their duty to stop crime, robbery, riots and violence. Help them keep our streets and homes safe, day and night. We commend them to Your loving care because their duty is dangerous. Grant them strength and courage in their daily assignments. Dear God, protect these brave men and women, grant them your almighty protection and unite them safely with their families after duty has ended.

Father Gary's St Nicholas Party will be on Saturday December 6, 2025 from 1 - 3:00 pm in the St Joseph Gym. It is a wonderful party for children of all ages from birth to 103!
